Chores widget blank or missing on the home screen? How to fix it
Short answer: a widget that shows an empty box or loses its text has almost always been stopped in the background by the launcher or the battery optimiser. Allow unrestricted battery use for the app, then remove and re-add the widget. If the widget is not in the widget list at all, the app was installed to an SD card or a work profile.
Reviews of checklist widgets describe the same handful of symptoms: “just a blank box”, “the widget is there, I can click it to edit a task, but the text is just missing”, “after the update the widget keeps disappearing and it is not in the widget list”. They come from four causes.
Cause 1: the launcher stopped the app in the background
A widget is drawn by your app, not by the launcher. When Android or a manufacturer battery manager puts the app to sleep, the launcher keeps the last picture it was given — or an empty frame. This is the most common reason for a blank card.
Fix it in the battery settings:
- Samsung: Settings → Battery → Background usage limits → make sure the app is not in “Sleeping apps” or “Deep sleeping apps”. Then Apps → the app → Battery → Unrestricted.
- Xiaomi / Redmi: Settings → Apps → Manage apps → the app → Battery saver → No restrictions, and turn on Autostart.
- Pixel / stock Android: Settings → Apps → the app → App battery usage → Unrestricted.
Cause 2: the widget needs to be re-added
After an app update the launcher sometimes keeps a stale widget instance. Long-press the widget, remove it, then long-press an empty spot on the home screen → Widgets → find the app → drag it out again. This takes seconds and fixes most “text is missing” cases.
Cause 3: the app is not where the launcher can see it
Widgets do not work for apps installed on removable storage, and an app installed in a work profile only offers its widget on the work profile page. Move the app to internal storage, or add the widget from the profile the app is in.
Cause 4: you are looking for the app icon, not the widget
This sounds obvious but it is the single most common review complaint for widget apps: “rubbish, doesn’t add widget to home screen”. Dragging the app icon out of the app drawer gives you a shortcut, not a widget. You have to long-press an empty area of the home screen and choose Widgets, then find the app in that list.
Still blank?
Restart the launcher (Settings → Apps → your launcher → Force stop), then re-add the widget. If a specific widget size is empty but another size works, resize it — some launchers hand a widget a size its layout cannot fill.
