Sharing a shopping list without making an account
Short answer: if you want live sync between two phones you need an account somewhere. If you mainly want the other person to have the list when they are at the shop, a text share from a local list does the job with no sign-up, no password and nothing stored on someone else’s server.
It is worth being honest about the trade-off. “No account” and “updates on both phones in real time” cannot both be true: something has to hold the shared copy. The question is whether you actually need live sync.
Option 1: a local list you share as text
Keep the list on one phone, and when someone heads to the shop, send it in your usual messenger. It arrives as plain text they can read without installing anything.
- Good: no sign-up, works offline, nothing is stored by a third party, the receiver needs no app.
- Bad: it is a snapshot. Items added after you send it do not appear on their copy.
Option 2: a shared note in a note app
Both of you already have an account with the note app’s platform, so nothing new is created. Sharing a note gives real-time editing.
- Good: live updates, both can edit.
- Bad: the list lives in a big app you open for other reasons, ticking items off is fiddly, and the content sits on that company’s servers.
Option 3: the fridge
A pen and a magnet. Do not dismiss it: it is visible to everyone in the house without anyone unlocking anything.
- Good: zero setup, everyone sees it.
- Bad: it stays at home when you are at the shop. A photo of it before you leave solves most of this.
Option 4: a home screen widget on each phone
Each phone keeps its own list and shows it on a widget. You are not syncing; you are removing the step of opening an app. Add items as you run out, share the list when someone shops.
- Good: adding takes one tap, ticking off takes one tap, no account, works offline.
- Bad: no live sync, so the shopper’s copy is whatever was shared with them.
Which to pick
If one of you does the shopping and the other adds things during the week, a local list plus a text share is simpler and more private than any account-based option. If you genuinely both edit while one of you is standing in the aisle, you need a synced app and an account is the price.
