What can you drink during intermittent fasting?
Short answer: during the fasting hours most people stick to drinks with little or no calories: water, sparkling water, black coffee and plain unsweetened tea. Anything with sugar, milk or noticeable calories is usually saved for the eating window.
This is general information, not medical advice. Ask your doctor what is right for you, especially if you have a health condition or take medication.
Usually fine
- Water and sparkling water, plain.
- Black coffee, no sugar or milk.
- Plain tea: green, black or herbal, unsweetened.
Usually avoided
- Juice, soda, sweetened drinks and alcohol.
- Coffee with milk, cream or sugar, and lattes.
- Smoothies, protein shakes and broths with calories.
Where opinions differ
Zero-calorie sweeteners, diet soda, a splash of milk and electrolyte drinks without sugar are debated. Some people allow them, others keep the fast strict. Pick a rule and stay consistent so your records mean the same thing every day.
Drink enough water
Thirst is easy to miss when you are not eating. Fastrail has a simple water counter: tap + for each glass.
