How often to check a child's temperature at night
Short answer: There is no single number for every child. Many parents check before a dose and again a while after it, and follow the interval their doctor suggested. Watching how your child looks and behaves matters as much as the number.
This is general information, not medical advice. Always follow the medicine label and your doctor or pharmacist, and contact a doctor if you are worried.
Useful moments to check
- Before giving fever medicine
- Some time after a dose, to see whether it came down
- When your child wakes, feels hotter, or seems different
Don't wake a sleeping child just for a number
If your child is sleeping comfortably, ask your doctor whether you need to wake them. Breathing, color and how easily they wake tell you a lot.
When to get help
Contact a doctor or emergency service promptly for a very young baby with fever, trouble breathing, unusual drowsiness, a seizure, signs of dehydration, or if you are simply worried.
