Herelet Privacy Policy
Effective date: 2026-10-13
Herelet — place notes and letters to your future self ("the app") is provided by DDJ A1 ("we", "us"). This policy explains what data the app handles and how. Herelet has no account system and we do not operate a server for it.
Data stored on your device
The letters you write (text, optional title, mood, lock setting, the date), the place each letter is pinned to (coordinates and a place label), photos you attach, and your settings are stored only on your device and are not transmitted to us. Deleting a letter, or uninstalling the app, deletes this data from your device. Android's standard app backup may include this data in your own Google account backup if you have device backup enabled; that backup is controlled by you and Google, not by us.
Location
- While using the app (optional). If you allow location access, the app reads your device's current position to pin a new letter where you are, to show your position on the map and distances to your letters, and to unlock a letter when you are back at its place. You can decline; you can then place letters by tapping the map.
- In the background (optional, off by default). Only if you turn on "Open letters when I arrive" in Settings and grant "Allow all the time", the app registers geofences around your locked letters with Android's location services so it can notify you when you return to one of those places, even when the app is closed. You can turn this off at any time in the app or in your phone's settings.
- The app itself does not send your location or your letters off your device. Geofence monitoring is performed by Google Play services on your device. The advertising SDK described below may separately collect approximate location as described in that section.
Map
The map background is loaded from OpenStreetMap tile servers. To display map tiles, your device requests map images for the area you view; like any web request this reveals your IP address and the requested map area to the tile provider (OpenStreetMap Foundation, see https://osmfoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_Policy). Your letters and pins are drawn on your device and are not sent to the map provider.
Photos
Photos you choose with the system photo picker are copied into the app's private storage on your device. The app does not access the rest of your photo library.
Backup export and import
If you use "Export backup", the app writes your letters to a file and hands it to the destination you choose (for example a file location or another app). "Import" reads a file you pick. These files are handled only by you and the destination you select.
Permissions the app asks for and why
- Location (optional) and background location (optional) — described above.
- Notifications (optional). For letter-unlock alerts and gentle "a year ago today" reminders. You can decline; the rest of the app keeps working.
- Run at startup. So reminders and geofences are restored after your phone restarts.
- Internet access and the advertising identifier (AD_ID). Used for map tiles and by the advertising components described below.
Information collected automatically
When you use the app, certain information may be collected automatically by third-party SDKs used for advertising. This may include:
- Your device's Internet Protocol (IP) address, which may be used to estimate your approximate (general) location
- Device or other identifiers, such as your device's advertising identifier (Advertising ID) and app set ID
- App interactions, such as session time, screens viewed, and ad views and taps
- Crash logs and diagnostic information, such as the mobile operating system and device model you use and ad performance data
This information is collected by the advertising SDK and shared with Google (AdMob) and its advertising partners for advertising, analytics, and fraud prevention, security and compliance purposes. It is encrypted in transit. It is not linked by us to your letters, which stay on your device.
Advertising
The app displays advertisements provided by Google AdMob: a banner at the bottom of some screens, an ad when the app starts, and full-screen ads only at natural pauses (for example right after you save a letter) — never while you are writing. To serve ads, AdMob and its partners may access your device's Advertising ID and the information described above. For users in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, and other regions where required, the app presents a consent form via Google's User Messaging Platform (UMP) before personalized advertising data is used; if you decline, non-personalized ads are shown instead. You can reset or limit ad personalization at any time in your device settings (Settings → Google → Ads), and you can change your consent choice from the app's Settings screen.
For more information on how Google uses data when you use partners' apps, see https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Children
Herelet is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Your rights
Because your letters exist only on your device, you are in direct control of them: you can delete letters in the app at any time, and uninstalling the app removes everything completely. Depending on your region (e.g. GDPR in the EEA/UK, CCPA in California), you may also have rights regarding data processed by advertising SDKs; you can exercise ad-related choices through the consent form and your device's ad settings described above.
Changes
We may update this policy. Material changes will be reflected on this page with a new effective date.
