Stop Subscription Creep: How to Track Subscriptions and Fixed Costs
Ask someone what they pay for subscriptions and they'll say "maybe $40". Then they check: streaming ×3, music, cloud storage, a fitness app from January, an AI tool, a game pass, a newspaper they forgot. It's $130. Subscriptions are designed to be small, automatic and forgotten, which makes them the single most common budget leak.
The 20-minute audit
Open your bank and card statements for the last two months and search for anything that appears in both. That's your recurring list. For each one write down: name, amount, billing day, and the honest answer to "did I use this in the last 30 days?" Cancel the ones with a no. Most people find one or two immediately.
What counts as a fixed cost
Anything that leaves on a schedule without a decision: rent or mortgage, utilities, phone, insurance, loan payments, subscriptions, a gym membership. The test is not the amount but the automation. A $12 subscription is a fixed cost; a $12 lunch is not.
Log them once, automatically
The mistake is entering rent by hand every month, or worse, not entering it and wondering why the month never adds up. Enter each fixed cost once with its billing day and let the app post it as an expense when the day comes. Two things happen: your budget-left number is honest from day one of the pay period, and you get a running total of what you've committed before you've spent anything on purpose.
Watch the monthly total, not the items
$13.99 is nothing. Fifteen of them is $210 a month, $2,500 a year. Keep the sum of active subscriptions visible and look at it whenever you're about to add another one. The question is never "can I afford this one?" — it's "what does the total become?"
Set a re-check date
Subscriptions creep because nobody schedules the audit. Put a note in the last week of your pay period, or simply glance at the next-billing list in the app: anything renewing that you haven't opened in a month is a candidate.
