How to weigh yourself in the morning

Short answer: Weigh yourself right after you wake up and use the bathroom, before you eat or drink, in the same (or no) clothes, on the same scale in the same spot. The goal is not a perfect number but the same conditions every time, so changes mean something.

A simple morning routine

  1. Wake up and use the bathroom.
  2. Step on the scale before breakfast, coffee or water.
  3. Wear the same thing each time, or nothing.
  4. Keep the scale on a hard, flat floor, not on a rug, and don't move it around.
  5. Write the number down right away, before you forget it.

How often should you weigh in?

Daily weigh-ins give the smoothest average, but weekly works too. If daily numbers stress you out, weigh in a few times a week and focus on the trend. Consistency of conditions matters more than frequency.

Don't react to one number

Morning weight still moves with last night's salt, carbs and sleep. Judge progress by your weekly average.
