How to Keep a Grocery Total with Tax and Stay Under Budget
Adding prices in your head works until the register shows a bigger number. The usual gaps are quantity, deals that only apply in pairs, and sales tax added at the end.
1. Decide the budget before you go
Write down the amount you can spend on this trip, not per month. A single number is easier to keep in mind in the aisle.
2. Add each item with its quantity
Count multiples as price × quantity once instead of re-adding the same item. Five cans at 78 cents is $3.90 in one step.
3. Count deals the way the register will
Buy 1 get 1 with 3 items charges for 2, not 1.5. Enter what you will actually pay.
4. Add tax to the running total
If your area adds sales tax at checkout, multiply the subtotal by (1 + tax rate). At 8%, a $50.00 subtotal is $54.00. If some items are not taxed, leave a margin.
5. Leave a buffer
Aim to stop at about 90% of the budget. Weighed produce and price differences at the shelf add up.
