How to split a bill with tip
Short answer: tip = subtotal × tip%, total = bill + tip, each person = total ÷ people. A $120 bill, 18% tip, 4 people: tip $21.60, total $141.60, $35.40 each.
1. Work out the tip
Multiply the subtotal by the tip percent as a decimal: 18% = 0.18. 120 × 0.18 = 21.60.
2. Add it to the bill
120 + 21.60 = 141.60 (add tax too if it isn't already in the bill).
3. Divide by the number of people
141.60 ÷ 4 = 35.40. If it doesn't divide evenly, round each share up to the next dollar so the server isn't short.
4. Uneven orders
Split shared plates evenly, add each person's own items, then apply the same tip percent to each share.
Doing it with Calcwell
Open the Tip tool, enter the bill, pick a tip percent and the number of people, and Calcwell shows the tip, the total and each person's share. Save it with a label like "Friday dinner" so you remember who owes what.
FAQ
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the common etiquette, but many people tip on the total. Either is fine; just be consistent.
How do I split a $120 bill with 18% tip between 4 people?
Tip: 120 × 0.18 = $21.60. Total: $141.60. Each: 141.60 ÷ 4 = $35.40.
What if someone ordered a lot more?
Split the shared items evenly and have each person add their own items, then apply the same tip percent to each share.
