Class Photo With Names: A 10-Second Routine for Teachers and Coaches
Every September (or every new term, every new season) the same problem: thirty new faces, and you want to call each one by name by Friday. Seating charts help but break the moment kids swap seats; flashcards take an evening to make. The fastest method we know is embarrassingly simple: one row photo per group, names left to right under it, look at it before class.
The routine
- Day one, last five minutes: line up each table group or squad (4–6 kids) and take one photo per group. Rows of 4–6 are far easier to learn than a whole-class shot.
- Type the names left to right while they are still in front of you, or from the roster right after. Numbered style prints ①②③ so a substitute can read it too.
- Add the group name in the place field ("Table 3", "U12 forwards") — you will search by it later.
- Before each lesson for the first week, flick through the group photos. Two minutes. By day three you are greeting kids by name at the door.
Keep it private
Photos of minors should not go through a cloud service you don't control. Use an app that works entirely on your phone — no account, no upload — and delete the photos at the end of the year if your school policy asks for it. Reuse it all year
- Substitutes: share the group photos with the cover teacher — names are on the picture, no separate list needed.
- Seating changes: retake the row photo in a minute; the old one stays searchable.
- Parent night: search the child's name, see the face, remember the story.
- Sports and clubs: one photo per position group; the coach's assistant learns names too.
