How Many Days Do I Have Left? A Simple Way to Calculate It

Short answer: take your expected age at death, subtract your current age, and multiply by 365.25. With an average life expectancy of about 80 to 85 years, a 30-year-old has roughly 18,000 to 20,000 days left, a 40-year-old about 14,600 to 16,400, and a 50-year-old about 11,000 to 12,800. It is an estimate for reflection, not a prediction.

The formula

Days left = (life expectancy in years × 365.25) − days you have already lived. Days lived is simply the number of days from your birthday to today. The .25 accounts for leap years.

Which life expectancy should I use?

National life tables give an average for your country and sex, usually somewhere between 75 and 87 years in most developed countries. Women tend to live a few years longer than men. Because averages hide a lot of variation, pick a round number that feels honest to you and remember that it can move up with healthy habits.

Why days feel different from years

"Forty more years" sounds endless. "About 14,600 days" does not. Counting in days, weeks or even weekdays ("about 2,000 more Saturdays") makes time concrete. This is the idea behind the Stoic practice of memento mori: remembering that time is limited so that today gets your full attention.

A life clock: your lifespan as one day

Another way to feel the number is to map your whole life onto 24 hours. If you have lived 42% of your expected life, it is about 10 AM. At 50% it is noon. Most people find a clock easier to grasp than a percentage, and it tends to feel encouraging rather than grim: at 10 AM most of the day is still ahead.
