How to count baby kicks: a simple count-to-10 routine
Short answer: once a day, at a time your baby is usually active, count movements until you reach 10 and note how long it took. What matters is getting to know your baby's usual pattern.
1. Pick your time
Many babies are busy after a meal or in the evening. Choose the same time each day if you can.
2. Get comfortable
Lie on your side or sit with your feet up, and focus on the movements.
3. Count every movement
Kicks, rolls, swishes and flutters all count. Hiccups usually do not.
4. Note the time to 10
Over a few days you will see what is normal for your baby.
5. Trust your feeling
If movements feel less than usual, contact your care provider straight away. This guide is general information, not medical advice.
