How to Combine Photos Without Losing Quality
When combined photos look blurry, the cause is almost always downscaling: the app shrinks each image before joining, or saves the result at a lower default size. Joining images edge to edge does not need to reduce quality at all. If the output keeps the original pixel width, it looks exactly as sharp as the originals.
Why the quality drops
- Low default output size. Many combiner apps cap the width or use a "standard" quality setting unless you find the high-quality option.
- Heavy JPG compression. A low JPG quality adds blocky artifacts, especially around text in screenshots.
- Resizing to fit a frame. Collage templates crop or scale photos to a fixed ratio.
- Messaging apps. Some chat apps recompress images when you send them. Send as a file if you need the full image.
Step by step
- Select the photos in the order you want them.
- Choose vertical, side by side or grid.
- For photos of different sizes, match width when stacking vertically or match height when joining side by side.
- Check the final size in pixels before saving. For a vertical join, the width should equal your photo width, for example 1080 px for most phone screenshots.
- Save as PNG for screenshots and text, or JPG for camera photos when you want a smaller file.
PNG or JPG?
PNG is lossless and keeps transparent areas, so it is best for screenshots, graphics and anything with small text. JPG files are much smaller and are fine for camera photos. Very tall images can get large, so check the MB size before sharing.
