Receipt scanner apps without an account or subscription

Short answer: look for an app that stores receipts on your phone and reads them with on-device text recognition. An app that does that has no technical reason to make you sign in, and no per-scan server cost that pushes it toward a paywall after a handful of receipts.

Why most receipt scanners ask for a login

Many scanners upload the photo to their own server, where text is extracted and the receipt is stored in a cloud account. That design needs an account, and every scan costs the developer money, which is why reviewers keep writing things like “Only 10 free receipts, then must sign up” and “Can't use without credit card”. A cloud account is useful if you need receipts on several devices or shared with an accountant, but many people simply want to snap a receipt and keep it.

Checklist before you install

• Scan limit: read the listing and recent one-star reviews for “free receipts”, “trial” or “subscription”. A 3-day trial that turns into a weekly charge is a common pattern.
• Account: check whether you can see a scanned result without signing in. Reviews mentioning “asks to log in” are a warning.
• Where receipts are stored: “stored on your device” or “works offline” means no account is needed. Then make sure there is a backup or export so a lost phone does not mean lost receipts.
• Export: CSV for spreadsheets and PDF for sharing. Receipts you cannot get out of the app are of little use at tax time.
• Fixing mistakes: no scanner reads every receipt perfectly, so editing the total should take one tap, not a re-scan.
• Permissions: a receipt scanner does not need your contacts or location.

Trade-offs of a no-account app

Without a cloud account, receipts do not sync between devices automatically. If you change phones, you move them with a backup file. For most personal and freelance use that is a fair trade for not handing your purchase history to another service.
